Break a Vase

How does fragmentation strengthen and connect us to the most crucial details of our lives? This studio session disrupts our familiarity with writing toward the story structure of beginning, middle, and end. We will look at the classic Japanese genre Zuihitsu, defined by its emulation of a painter’s brushstrokes. This style gathers loosely connected personal essays and fragmented ideas. We will delve into generative writing activities, where participants will be encouraged to explore excerpts of audio, flyers, digital subject lines, overheard conversations, and more. The title of this studio session is inspired by Derek Walcott’s 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature speech.
